My Vintage Birthday Party...You're All Invited!

A Surprise Party...For Me?

Hello, Friends!  My birthday is coming soon and it occurred to me that it would be a really nice gesture on your part if you were to throw me a surprise birthday party.  I haven't had one since my BFF Charlotte planned one for my 12th birthday.  It was a lot of fun and I got white lipstick...all the rage...and the issue of Tiger Beat that had "heart throb" Jay North on the cover.  You remember him...the kid who played Dennis the Menace?  He was 16 and so dreamy!

Let's get started...
If you need any ideas, this book should prove helpful...but really...all you need to do is follow 10 simple steps...

1.  Buy some cute invitations!

Invite all my Bloggy Friends!

2. Gather all your party supplies.

3.  Decide on the cake.

Forget those other cakes...I want a Barbie cake!

I don't want another disappointment!

When I was growing up in Alpine, the little blonde girl next door got a Barbie cake for her birthday.  Her grandma, a talented cake decorator, made the most beautiful Barbie cakes around.  She also created cute choo-choo train cakes and those gorgeous sugar Easter eggs that had scenes of bunnies and chicks inside.  Not to mention divine chocolate eggs decorated with frosting flowers. We were lucky at that time to get jelly beans and Cracker Jack in our baskets, let alone anything chocolate.  And our cakes were usually Betty Crocker sheet cakes with those hard sugar flowers and "Happy Birthday" letters.

4.  Buy me a present...I like paper dolls!
I will also accept a pogo stick, a Skipper doll, or a ginormous bottle of bubbles!

5.  Wrap my gifts in cute paper.

6.  Don't forget the birthday card!
Hint...the best ones have nickels, dimes and quarters taped inside!

7.  Play games...like Musical Chairs and...

...Pin the Tail on the Donkey.

No Clowns!!!!

8.  Please don't sing "Happy Birthday!"
As a child I never could stand this song...I guess I didn't like the attention.
Also, I would hide when it was time to sing at other children's parties.

9.  When it's time to blow out the candles, make sure this kid keeps away from my cake!
I can blow out my own candles, thank you very much!

Do you remember that kid at your birthday party that didn't go home when it was over...who hung around hoping for another cupcake?  Remember that strange little girl who wanted "do overs" on the "Drop the Clothespin" game and wanted to "help" you play with your presents?  That was me!

See...I told you so.

10.  Send the guests home with party hats and balloons.
These 10 little steps should make it the perfect party!

Big Party "Don't!"
I'm 59...not Methuselah's Granny!

Surprise!!!
Oh, dear friends...you shouldn't have!

I was going to wait until the 7th to post this...but I was too excited!

 Update!
May 31, 2015
I was wrong...it was 16 Magazine with the Jay North cover.
I wasn't wrong about him being "dreamy"

Coulrophobia...fear of Clowns!

Warning...this post may contain clowns!
When I was a child I was terrified of clowns.  That's really not much of a news flash...many children suffer from "coulrophobia" or fear of clowns.  It's a relatively new term..."coulro" is from the greek meaning "stilt walker" I guess there are some clowns on stilts...but none in MY nightmares.  I don't think that adults get the concept...children HATE clowns!  A few studies have shown that children do not want to see murals of clowns in hospitals, day care centers and doctors offices...yet adults keep putting them there!  And they invite them to birthday parties!  I know...right?  I am trying to think of a time when I might have enjoyed the comic antics of our red-nosed, painted-faced friends...nope!  Can't think of one.

When it began...
Pop goes the Weasel...
Baby's First Nightmare!

They seem so tame and innocent...those evil Jack-in-the-Boxes!  Baby turns the little handle...the music box plays a cheerful tune.  Turn, turn, turn....then BOOM!  Up pops a sinister little clown.  Mom laughs.  Dad laughs.  Baby needs a new diaper.  Big Shirley still can't bear the suspense of the pop-up clown!  I also have a heart attack when balloons pop and the Pillsbury biscuit package explodes!  Thanks Mattel!

My Childhood Clowns...
Bozo the Clown
This was one of the least-frightening poses...lol!

Clarabelle the Clown
Terrifying!
Early children's TV programming seemed to be filled with hideous and terrifying clowns.  They clomped around on their ginorous feet, making horrible noises with their red bulbous noses.  And what big hideous grins they grinned.  Actually...the two scariest grins on TV weren't clowns per se...but Liberace and Jimmy the Mouseketeer used to give me nightmares!  Too many teeth! Way too many teeth!

The Dee Burger Clown
My parents loved the 5 hamburgers for a buck!

My first really frightening experience with clowns took place one Halloween night after the school carnival.  We were all high on sugar and exhausted from trick or treat.  Four of us shared a room back then and someone had been jumping on the bed and pulled the curtain off the window again.  After being threatened with the loss of our candy...what was left of it...we finally settled down.  Just then my little sister let out a blood-curdling shriek.  A clown was scratching at the window!  Now I don't know if this was a sugar-induced hallucination...but I believed her!  Hello, Coulrophobia!

My parents thought my fear of clowns was hilarious.  One parade day in American Fork, I was keeping a close watch for unicycles and go-carts...popular clown vehicles.  I spotted one about a block down the street...which gave me plenty of time to hide in the car before he got to where we were sitting.  I crouched on the floor of the front seat...waiting for the clown demon to pass by.  At a knock on the window I looked up...and there he was grinning down at me...the most hideous face since Liberace!!  Thanks Mom and Dad for telling him where to find me...that explains the bed-wetting incidents.

 Flower Power...

It was the Age of Aquarius and I gradually outgrew my aversion to clowns.  I am pretty sure I was over it...except for one very strange incident which took place when I was about 15.  It was spring and the lilacs outside my bedroom window were in bloom.  I have always loved the scent of lilacs.  There was a bit of a breeze, so I thought I would open the window to let the "romantic fragrance waft gently through the billowing curtains."  The window was stuck...I pushed and pushed until...CRACK!...the glass gave way and sliced the palm of my right hand.  I must have been a bit shocky as my mother drove me to the doctor for stitches.   For I saw as clear as day...on every corner of Main Street...a clown holding a single flower.  Not more than one clown...the same clown!  Yikes!

So...now that I am grown, they don't bother me so much.  I enjoy the idea of circuses and making circus-themed crafts...working on my Summer Circus decor right now.  I can almost say that I was over my fear of clowns for good...until HE came to town!

"They all float down here..."  Pennywise from "It."

That's it...I'm done!
Can't Sleep...Clowns will eat me!"  Bart Simpson

Talkin' Pictures...Our Life in Movie Quotes!

Our Video Store in the 1990's
The hideous minivan was mine...a car so wretched that it's
name was Jean-Claude the Damn Van.  But that's another story.

Top Hat Video!
Once upon a time...the 90s to be exact...the Hatfield family owned a small shopping center in the Salt Lake area called Fox Crossing.  When the video store went bankrupt...the Hatfields decided to take it over and join a chain of video stores called Top Hat Video.  We always loved movies...but now the movies became our lives.

"Top Hat" the movie our store was named after.
Our colors were hot pink and black...I know, right?

Our whole family worked there...my teenagers had to be driven from Highland to the Salt Lake Valley several times a week after school.  My job was merchandising...decorating the store...and movie purchasing.  Our weekends were spent at the movie theater and each summer we went to Vegas for the big Video Convention, where we met studio reps and movie stars promoting their lastest flicks.  I was there when Will Wheaton announced that he quit his role as Wesley Crusher on Star Trek the Next Generation because "I wanted to grow as an actor." It was quite a life...until a Blockbuster and a Hollywood Video moved in within a couple of blocks of our little store. Suddenly "Mom and Pop" weren't cool anymore.  So we cut our losses and sold the store.  We thought we were leaving the movie life behind...but it was too ingrained in our psyches.  Like the episode of Star Trek where the alien race can only communicate in historical references...our family communicates in movie quotes.

Notable Quotables...
"I totally paused!"
We say this almost everyday...depending on who's driving.
Must use a "Valley Girl" inflection.

"Everybody remember where we parked."
My favorite Kirk quote...as they leave their ship in Golden Gate Park.
Used by us in every strange parking garage.

"Cap'n there be whales here!"
Mr. Scott...another favorite we will use for no reason.
Scottish accent is mandatory.

"Who's the moosiest moose we know...Marty Moose!"
A song we often sing on road trips to Disneyland.

"Okay, Sparky"
All of our daughters' boyfriends and husbands are known as "Sparky"
Some...the boyfriends...change so often we don't bother learning their names.

"Well, skin me alive and call me luggage!
Daddy Alligator...our expression of surprise.
Tiny Toons Vacation is one of our family's all-time favorites.
It's hard to find and isn't...as far as I know...on DVD.

"Happy World Land...Happy World Land...
where the fun doesn't stop, and only eighty bucks a pop,
at beautiful Happy World Land!"
More from Tiny Toons...we also sing this on the way to Disneyland.

Mystery Science Theater 3000...the most brilliant TV show and movie ever!
A lone astronaut...either Joel or Mike...is stranded in space with a couple of wise-cracking robots.  For some reason...an evil villainess is torturing them by forcing them to watch really bad movies.  Her plot is foiled when they have too much fun heckling the movies. It's like sitting behind some college kids...or the boys from Big Bang Theory.  A few of my favorite quotes follow:

"This Island Earth"

"Science and Industry!"
"Big men putting screwdrivers into things...turning them...ADJUSTING THEM!"
This must be said in a droning voice like the voiceovers on those movies
we watched in school on the building of Hoover Dam.
I think of this every time that commercial for patenting your inventions comes on.

"Jack Frost"
"Ivanuska...I have a new church hat!"
Funny little mushroom man...ridiculous "Russo-Finnish Coproduction."

More Family Favorites...

 The Best of the Rest"
As I got going on this post I realized that there are just too many great quotes and it's taking too much  space...so here is a list of more favorites...

"It's so stimulating...being your hat!"   Labyrinth
Often said when someone is boring us.

"I'm older and have more insurance"   Fried Green Tomatoes
I say this every time I get a good parking space before someone else can get there.

"Mother, I'm hungry."  101 Dalmations
Chubby puppy looked just like our son Geoff...who is always hungry!
English accent  preferred.

"It's not a tumor!"   Kindergarten Cop
When any of the kids would get a headache, we'd say "It's probably a tumor."

"There's no crying in baseball!" A League of Their Own.
Whenever the granddaughters cry about something stupid.

"Napoleon Dynamite"
"Tina, you lard...come and get some dinner!"
"I caught you a delicious bass."
"Whatever I feel like...gosh!"
"...bring me my chapstick.  My lips hurt real bad."

I think I will end with Napoleon Dynamite...this is...to our family at least...one of the funniest movies ever made.  We will be quoting this film until the end of time.  I'll bet we're not the only family to do this...talk in quotes.  I'd be interested to hear from you what your favorites are...you know you want to!

WARNING!!!  I MAY COME BACK HERE AND ADD MORE QUOTES!
"Inconceivable!"
(Extra credit if you know which movie that is from...lol!)

Jurassic Trailer Park...Or How I Waste Time!

A Dinosaur ate my homework...
When you are in the process of doing something...some chore that has become tedious and you can't get out of it...do you find yourself distracted by other projects that are more fun?  I am supposed to be writing a report on my great-great grandmother for the May meeting of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.  But I am having trouble finding enough information about her to do her justice.  So I sit down at my computer...and play on Pinterest...or Blogger...or Facebook...anything but what I am supposed to be doing.  Yesterday I wrote about my old school.  Today I found an old story I wrote some years back when I was bored watching my daughter's softball game.  Grandma Sarah will have to wait a few more days...today I want to take you on a trip to...

Jurassic Trailer Park...
The open hovercraft carrying the two visiting scientists sped silently over the cracked and unused highway outside the city dome.  Neither spoke as they passed the skeletal remains of the old "Tomahawk Drive-in" and "Joe's Junk Yard," where sand drifted through the rusting carcasses of old Buicks.  A pyramid of discarded tires had been smoldering for over a hundred years and would probably do so for a hundred more. The oily black smoke stung their eyes.

"I can't believe these places still exist," said Ellie at last.  She was a trim blonde woman who specialized in American Landfills.

"They were discovered at the end of the Five Year Sandstorm," Sam informed her.  "I hear they are close to unearthing a 7-11 that still has its original Slurpee Machine."

Sam, who had a Doctorate in Late 20th Century Pop Culture...Coke, Sprite, etc...leaned forward in anticipation.  He had prepared for this moment his entire adult life.  It was the proof that validated his years of research.  He wiped his sweat-streaked face with the bandanna he always wore.  A few more hot dusty miles to go.

No pictures are available of Sam and Ellie
But they probably looked like these two people.

Are we there yet?...
It seemed to Ellie that she only blinked and the gate appeared before them.  She was puzzled by the height of the heavy electrified fence surrounding the compound.  But it was the sign over the gate that made her heart beat fast within her rib cage.  In garish flashing neon the sign read:

"JURASSIC TRAILER PARK"

They were met at the gate by a white-haired gentleman who dressed like Colonel Sanders.  His smile was pleasant as he greeted them.

"Welcome to Jurassic Trailer Park!  I really don't think your inspection is necessary, but the investors insisted.  I'm already behind schedule.  If you pass us off, we could be open to the public by Memorial Day.  My name is Hammond.  Shall we begin the tour?

"Let's pop in first at the Manager's Office.  We find it to be typical of the sites we have uncovered across the former United States."
They entered through a torn screen door into a dim stuffy room.  An ancient electic fan strove valiantly to create a breeze...to no avail.  Sam took a few steps and stopped, looking at his feet.

"I don't believe it!" he exclaimed.  "This is the largest intact specimen of linoleum I've ever come across."

"Yes.  We're very proud of it.  There was enough to do the entire Manager's Office and part of the men's restroom.  It's been dated 20 years B.C...Before Congoleum!" Hammond bragged.

A wood-grained plastic box with a moving picture screen buzzed fitfully in one corner.  On the screen, a red-headed woman was whining to a Latino man wearing a Toreador costume.

"Please, Ricky!  Please let me be in the show!" she cried, clinging desperately to his pant leg while he tried to make a break for the door.

"That's a recorded broadcast, of course.  We were able to piece together an entire working television from various sites throughout the dig.  But without the primitive signals..."  Hammond sighed, "You know how it is.  This is an example of the sophisticated programming enjoyed by this culture."

They left the office and began walking through the avenues of portable housing units the Old Ones called "Mobile Homes."  The variety of dwellings was amazing.  They ranged from little pink and cream breadboxes...common in the 1950s...to magnificent Double Wides, complete with decks and hot tubs.  They all sat proudly on their postage stamp-sized lots, roofs bristling with TV antennas.

No matter the size of the home, each seemed to have the requisite allotment of pink plastic flamingos, gnomes and hanging pots of artificial flowers.

"We think the flamingos were required by law," Hammond informed them.  They explored inside some of the restored models.

The interiors were typified by green or orange shag carpeting and "harvest gold" Frigidaires covered with magnets shaped like pigs, fruit, and cartoon characters.  Many homes sported velvet paintings of a long dead "King."

"How they must have loved him," Ellie whispered reverently.  Also popular were framed antique prints of dogs playing poker...copies available for sale in the Gift Shoppe...Hammond reminded them.

"The male members of this ancient society used to sit in reclining chairs and observe warfare carried out on 100 yard battlefields...between redskins and pirates," Hammond began his lecture.  "In between skirmishes, the female would bring him intoxicating beverages and crisp vegetable chips fried in hot oil.  Let's move on, shall we?"

"Mr. Hammond," Sam interupted.  "I've been meaning to ask you about the electrified fence.  Are you trying to keep something out...or something in?"

"Why, keep something in, of course" Hammond said cryptically.

"The Disney Millennium Park doesn't use electric fencing." Ellie added.

"Well," Hammond replied. "When the Pirates of the Caribbean Galaxy breaks down...the pirates don't bore the tourists.  I don't want the little dickens to escape without visiting the Park Museum and Gift Shoppe.  Why, we have a genuine push lawn mower on display...the only one of its kind on the planet.

"The kiddies will enjoy the Jurassic Trailer Park souvenirs.  We have whoopi cushions, squirt guns, slinkys and those x-ray specs that see through women's clothing.  Sam...Ellie...let me give you one of these t-shirts to take home.  It says 'My parents went to Jurassic Trailer Park and all I got was this  lousy t-shirt'.   Clever...eh?"

Sam and Ellie exchanged looks.  "Run!" she cried.  They ran for the gate, leaving a puzzled old man choking on their dust.

Ignoring his pleas to stay and finish the tour, they took one last look back at Jurassic Trailer Park.  As they watched, the neon letters J, I, and C went dark.

One more afternoon wasted!

To gnome me is to love me!
