Halloween Lantern Collection! Repost!

Vintage Blowmolds for Halloween...

I posted this last September when my blog was pretty new.  I am currently working on changing the decor on my front porch and I haven't decided if I will use these cuties this year or not.  The following text is from last September.

I would love to have a huge collection of vintage Halloween decorations, but they are hard to find and can be expensive. One exception are those funky plastic blowmold lanterns from the 60s and 70s. As a child I was delighted to see them lighting a neighbor's windows. I never realized how many different designs existed. Most of my lanterns are still in working condition and most cost only from $1-$5 at the D.I. or Savers. Some are duplicates and some are more faded than others. I don't know why, but seeing them all lit up at night makes me happy! If you have happy memories of these simple lights, try visiting your local thrift stores and maybe a few late season yard sales.

This bright orange owl is my favorite. I found it "new in package" on eBay.

  1. Lots of color on that front porch of yours! I'm just getting out there to do my porch. It's hot here so I was dripping just deadheading flowers yesterday. I have my autumn stuff up inside but held on the outside other than a galvanized bucket of mums on the step!

  2. We had the pumpkin guy with the top hat when I was growing up. I've been meaning to go through the boxes at my folks' house when I visit and see if he's still there--then swipe him for my own kiddos! :)

  3. Wow, what a neat collection! I really think the owl is my favorite, too! Sure makes me want to start thinking about Fall decore! My Cottenwoods are turning color and the leaves are falling all over the yard! A little early this year, but so pretty!

  4. You've got a fantastic collection, Shirley! I never pass these up anymore either, even though some of mine are duplicates too. I find them at our Goodwill all the time, for about $3. Your owl is currently on my must-have list!

  6. So glad you reposted! Those are so cute. I think the owl is my favorite too!

I know what you mean about vintage Halloween decorations being expensive...I pick them up to look at the price, but usually have to set them back down after reading the tag! I guess that's what the craft store is for! :)

  7. eek...Shirley, for SURE you should put them put! They are all so AWESOME!!! I know that all Halloween things are very expensive and hard to find. People are getting "wise" which makes them hard to find and prices go up!
    Loved seeing them!
    Warmly,

  12. I love your collection! We had the jack-o-lantern with one the cat when I was growing up. Actually we had two. Mom cut holes in the sides and attached them to the lights on each side of the door! What a great memory...

  14. Hi Shirley! I loved your Swiss post. I am hoping for time to create Swiss characters as this is a wonderful idea.
Your decorations are tremendously fabulous! I didn't know they were called blow molds.
Thank you for wanting to join the ornament swap. I have your name down. I will post tutorial on Saturday.
Have a lovely soon to be fall weekend! Elizabeth

  16. Shirley, I too have been collecting the Blow Molds for both Halloween and Christmas. I only have a couple for both holidays. I would also love to have a few for Easter. What fun they are collecting these. Thanks for posting this.
